About John Harrison

John Harrison

Owner, Harrison Law Office

My Practice

I have a broad general practice that includes:

  • Real estate (residential and commercial)

  • Wills, estates and powers of attorney

  • Family law (including separation agreements, cohabitation agreements, prenuptial agreements, and uncontested divorces). My associates handle contested family law matters

  • Corporate/commercial Law (purchase/sale of a business and commercial lease work)

  • Contract law

My History

I obtained my Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba in 1977 and obtained my Law degree in 1988. While I did practice law in downtown Winnipeg for many years, I have practiced law from our convenient premises located on Scurfield Boulevard for over 15 years and have operated under the name Harrison Law Office since 2004.

For a 2 ½ year period between 1989 and 1991 I took time off from full-time law practice to create and operate a student placement centre at the University of Manitoba (“U of M”) Faculty of Management (now the Asper School of Business). I have otherwise practiced law on a full-time basis since 1988.

I Teach:

  • The Commercial Law course (GMGT 3300) for the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba (since 1991); and

  • The Introduction to Commercial Law course (BUS 3660) for the Department of Business and Administration at the University of Winnipeg (since the mid to late 1990’s).

My Personal Life

I am married to Susan, who until June of 2018 taught full-time (over 40 years), most recently in the Winnipeg School Division. Susan’s passion is teaching, and she continues to do so on a substitute teacher basis in some Winnipeg schools. Our son is a theatre graduate from Memorial University in Newfoundland and works professionally in that area whenever he can. He continues to pursue his theatre and singing career in Toronto. Our daughter is following in her mother’s footsteps as a school teacher and is a graduate of the 5 year University of Winnipeg Education program. She currently teaches the Manitoba curriculum to grade school students in a private school in Bangkok, Thailand.

Outside of family, my passion (not necessarily strong skill set) is golf. When I am not at work or with family, I am likely to be at the golf course.

Professional and Volunteer Activities

In addition to teaching at both Universities, I have been a board or committee member of several organizations, including:

  • Victoria General Hospital Board of Trustees (past Chairperson)

  • Certified General Accountants Association of Manitoba (and I’m an honorary CGA/CPA)

  • Chaired committee re separation of Red River Community College from the Dept. of Education

  • Red River Community College Board of Governors (past Chairperson)

  • Committee to define terms for creation of the Post Secondary Council on Education (member)

  • Wildewood Club (past President)

  • Data Processing Management Association (in another life) – past President
